Alan (Lanny) was killed by a car on the streets of Caracas, Venezuela in 1973.  Those who remember him will recall has great interest in international affairs, which somehow had brought him to Venezuela.  A tragic loss of someone so young, so kind, and so caring, who could have contributed so much.

It turns out that Lanny and I were distantly related: (his father and I were 6th cousins), his great-grandfather (Leopold Einstein) had been born in the small town in southwest Germany in which my father grew up, and his father had been one of my family's sponsors when they fled Nazi Germany in spring 1939.  His father Paul, who changed his last rname to Eden during an era when it was undesirable to have a foreign-sounding ( let alone jewish sounding) surname.  Paul told me that Lanny died instantly, with no drawn-out suffering.
